An oval shaped face is generally considered more feminine and is what women desire. However some have a square jaw since birth while in others, constantly chewing gum, jaw grinding, constant clinching results in overdeveloped muscles of the jaw line which could be undesirable and is due to Masseter musscle hypertrohy.
Reduction Osteotomy (bone cutting) is a surgery performed on those who have a prominent square jaw. The angle of the jaw is trimmed down by cutting the bone from inside the mouth. This needs an extensive preparation. An alternative treatment is Botulinum Toxin Type A given to each masseter muscle which reduces the bulk of the jaw muscle making the jaw look slimmer, the face oval and thinner. So now all it takes a few tiny injections on the jaw and you will see the jaw shape up gradually and people complementing you for loosing weight!!

How long does the treatment take? And how does it work?
Treatment takes around 10 minutes as Botulinum Toxin Type A is placed in the muscles via tiny injections using very fine needles. No anesthetic is required.
After injection, it takes 2-4 weeks for Botulinum Toxin Type A to begin taking effect and the peak effect occurs in 2-3 months. The result lasts for 6-12 months, sometimes longer, depending on the individual. The doctor will repeat the treatment as required to gain the desired change in shape of the face
Do patients experience any side-effects?
The most common side-effects are temporary, including soreness or mild bruising.
Chewing and swallowing food are not affected.
